Jakarta – Not Butet Kartaredjasa It’s called not being able to create stunning and meaningful works of art. The man who is also known as a theater and film stage actor, also has a solo exhibition, Melik Nggendong Lali National Gallery of Indonesia (GNI), Central Jakarta, guys.

His figure is like Petruk, black, but his face is gold. His face was also slightly raised while his hands were on his hips. Behind it, there are three very large paintings dominated by red and white with the words ‘Melik Nggendong Lali’, what does that mean?
Butet Kartaredjasa said that Melik Nggendong Lali was a metaphor. “Melik Nggendong Lali was inspired by traditional Central Javanese glass paintings, the form of a clown. People who have wealth and power often make people forget,” said Butet Kartaredjasa at the National Gallery of Indonesia, Friday (26/4/2024).
Actually, Butet made the statue as a warning to everyone. “So that you are aware (remember),” he said while laughing.
“Always remember the origins of its origin, so the word ‘belonging’ is always ‘carrying’. That is a life value that relies on morals, morality. On ethics, so this is more or less an interpretation of the spiritual process. So it goes to the actual thing,” he stressed.
So, for Petruk’s form, why do you think Butet was inspired by one of the Punakawan characters?
Butet continued his speech. He deliberately took Petruk from a depiction of the latest social and political situation in Indonesia. Suddenly, Butet, who was Sherina’s father in the film Sherina’s Adventure, also said that Petruk was likened to a Punakawan who suddenly became a ruler.

Butet compared Petruk to having his ears plugged and permanently deaf. “I can’t be reminded, jongos is a representation of wong cilik (small people). They don’t want to be reminded, they don’t want to be told to come down, oh that means they’re deaf, their ears are plugged, then I made a statue installation, I checked (the image) was black, but I gave their face gold,” He didn’t hear it. His face was full of falsehood,” he emphasized once more.
The meaning of this gold-faced Petruk statue will greet art lovers from the start of the exhibition hall. If you visit the National Gallery of Indonesia, at a glance you will see the figure behind Butet’s inspiration, but whatever it is, he leaves the interpretation to the visitors.
“Because the author is dead, let there be multiple interpretations,” said exhibition curator Asmudjo.
