Discover a planet where it rains rocks

Scientists have discovered a planet where it rains not water but rocks.

Yes indeed, this volcanic planet called K2.141b rains rocks.

Researchers from the University of York used a computer simulation to predict the climate and atmosphere of this unique planet.

The planet is very close to its host star and two-thirds of it is covered in fiery light, while the dark side is cold.

The research results were published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The planet also has a lava ocean that can be 62 miles deep, while supersonic winds blow at 3,100 miles per hour on its surface.

Scientists say that all rocky planets, including Earth, were initially molten worlds that rapidly cooled and solidified. Volcanic planets provide us with rare glimpses of this evolutionary process.

Computer simulations indicated that rock showers occur at K2.141b, as mineral vapors are blown into the rocks by supersonic winds, and the rocks then rain down on the lava.

The researchers hope that the next generation of telescopes will allow them to observe the planet up close and confirm how accurate the computer simulations are.

Important in this regard will be NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, which will begin operations in 2021.

It is an Earth-sized planet with a solid surface, an ocean, and an atmosphere made of rocks.
