It’s a month of January that will go down as that of social breakdown in the video game industry. After the game engine Unity and then the “live streaming” platform Twitch which announced that they would respectively separate 25% and 35% of their workforce this week, it is the turn of Discord to announce a plan restructuring.
Often nicknamed the “gamer’s chat”, this online discussion service that video game enthusiasts are keen on will part ways with 17% of its teams. Or 170 employees. “We have grown quickly and have expanded our workforce even faster, multiplying them by five since 2020,” wrote founder and current CEO Jason Citron in an internal memo sent to employees, reports “The Verge” . As a result, we are engaged on more projects and we have become less efficient in the way we operate.”
