On the 27th, a subcommittee session was held to consider disaster prevention and mitigation education at the Japan Teachers Union National Conference on Educational Research, which is currently being held in Sapporo. With the importance of evacuation drills once once more heightened by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, an elementary school’s efforts to devise evacuation drills led by children so that they can take appropriate evacuation actions even when teachers are not around were reported.

Masahiro Akei (35), a teacher at Tomita Elementary School in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, spent a year thinking regarding disaster prevention during comprehensive study time with the fourth-grade students he taught in 2022. In addition to visiting a disaster prevention learning facility that shared the experience of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, he also created a hazard map while checking the safety of the area for the children themselves.

In the third semester, all grades conduct evacuation drills devised by fourth-year students. The students called out to each other and evacuated, assuming the teachers were not around.
