Disaster in the Boardroom: When the CEO’s Dream Hire Became a Nightmare

Disaster in the Boardroom: When the CEO’s Dream Hire Became a Nightmare

This appears from an article published on Monday on the Danish Nursing Council’s website.

According to the chairman of the municipality’s Elderly Care Committee, Carsten Ullmann Andersen (DD), it is cost savings after a budget overrun of six million kroner this year that has triggered the dismissal notice.

– The firing of the nurse was what hurt the least, he says to the Danish Nursing Council.

Margrethelund really came into turmoil during 2021, when Nordjyske could tell several stories about hair-raising conditions at the care center, which was built in 1976, in several articles.

The article also caused a stir at the Agency for Patient Safety, which at the beginning of December 2021 made two notified inspection visits to Margrethelund’s two relief departments.

During the two inspections, 50 objectionable conditions were revealed, which on 12 January 2022 triggered a total of 14 orders.

The startling result of the inspections meant that a severance agreement was concluded with the head of the care center shortly afterwards.

Soon after, the nurse, who has now been fired, was hired. With the precise task of correcting the many procedures that were lagging – and ensuring a general competence boost for the employees at Margrethelund.

That work paid off. In any case, the Patient Safety Authority was able on 27 October 2022 to cancel the last of the 14 injunctions that were issued after the first inspection 11 months earlier.

According to the Danish Nursing Council, Brønderslev Municipality did not want to enter into an agreement on layoff with the newly fired nurse, who is now on sick leave.

She fears that the staff at Margrethelund, with her farewell and the risk of further savings, will fall back into “old habits” due to work pressure and a lack of focus.

She says directly to the Danish Nursing Council that Margrethelund risks new orders in the event of new inspections.

Carsten Ullmann Andersen does not fear that. According to the Danish Nursing Council, he trusts that the other staff, thanks to the completed further training and the employment of two department managers, can ensure that problems do not arise again at the care center, which cause concern among the relatives of the residents of the place, and which the Patient Safety Authority steps in opposite.
