Disassembly of Apple Vision Pro: Japanese parts account for 40% Nikkei Chinese

Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Chinese version: Nikkei Chinese website) found through a disassembly survey that among the parts used in the glasses-type terminal “Vision Pro” launched by Apple in February, 42% were supplied by Japanese companies in terms of price. The terminal uses monitors from Sony Group and memory from Kioxia. By country or region, Japan ranks first, beating South Korea, Taiwan and mainland China.

The proportion of components from Japanese companies in the Vision Pro far exceeds the 10% in Apple’s most high-end smartphone model, the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Through dismantling, it is obvious that Japanese companies have advantages in the optical field that requires precision processing technology such as ultra-small OLED displays.

With the assistance of the Japanese research company Fomalhaut Techno Solutions (located in Chuo-ku, Tokyo), the Nikkei Business News (Chinese version: Nikkei Chinese Network) dismantled the Vision Pro released by Apple in the United States on February 2. The manufacturing companies of the main components were determined and the purchase prices were calculated.

The total cost of parts is regarding US$1,200 (regarding 180,000 yen), which is regarding one-third of the selling price (regarding 500,000 yen). This is more than three times the total number of parts of the glasses-type terminal “Quest 3” (price starting at 74,800 yen) to be released by Meta in the United States in October 2023.

In addition to the OLED display, Sony also provides multiple camera image sensors for the Vision Pro. The memory card used to store data is produced by Kioxia, and the motor for the cooling fan is produced by Nidec. There are also some electronic components that may come from Murata Manufacturing and Nippon Denpa Industries.

By country or region, South Korea ranks second in terms of component proportion, accounting for 13%. Vision Pro uses DRAM produced by SK Hynix. Taiwan accounts for 9%, and Foxconn Technology Group, a subsidiary of Hon Hai Precision Industry, is responsible for the assembly of the terminal. Mainland Chinese companies that supply 7% of parts and components provide batteries, etc.

In the iPhone launched in 2007, Japanese companies initially had a certain presence by providing displays, etc., but as production expanded, their share was lost to Korean and American manufacturers. If Japanese parts manufacturers want to maintain their advantage in parts for Vision Pro, they need to play an important role in reducing costs with the goal of popularization.
