“Estonia prepared extremely well for us, they put so much pressure on the service. We also had some problems with the acceptance,” said Austria’s Libera Tamina Huber in an ORF interview. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to build up as much pressure as we did last time, which made life pretty difficult for us. The disappointment is extremely great that we didn’t make it by a few points.”
The most exciting part of the final was the first set, in which the home side were ahead 22:17 and 24:21, then had to fend off a few set balls, but ultimately closed the sack. But it obviously took too long to take a deep breath, because team boss Roland Schwab’s squad had no chance in the second round. But the Austrians pulled themselves together in the third set with a good service performance. They made it 2-1 without any problems, before another slump happened due to a weak acceptance.

Service misery ensures a preliminary decision
In the deciding set, the hosts fell behind 3:8 following a 3:3, among other things because of a renewed service misery. The ÖVV team mightn’t get any closer to the Baltic women than to within one point (10:11), in which top player Kertu Laak, in contrast to the group games (one win each), was there and caused a lot of pressure. “There are these waves in play, the roller coaster ride. We started great, lead and then lose stability,” said ÖVV team boss in an ORF interview. “The result shows that in the end it’s only regarding one or two points. The teams were so close together today.”
The fact that in 2024 there will not be stronger opponents is also bitter due to a change in the international tournament rhythm decided by the International Federation (FIVB) in the past few days. World championships change from a four-year to a two-year rhythm and from even to odd years, following the title fights in 2022 it starts in 2025. The continental title fights change to even years, following the upcoming EM 2023 it will be the next one – by the ÖVV teams intended – only give in 2026 instead of 2025.
ÖVV men in the second leg under pressure
The ÖVV men drew a smooth 0:3 (-19,-19,-19) in their semi-final first leg once morest Latvia in Styria on Saturday, which meant that in the return game on Wednesday (7.40 p.m., live ORF Sport +) in Jelgava is under pressure.
