There is no political will to promote accessibility for people with disabilities in France. This is what director and producer Dominique Farrugia deplores, suffering from multiple sclerosis and now living in a wheelchair.
As he came to talk regarding his book “She never left me”, at the microphone of the show It’s up to you on France 5, Dominique Farrugia gave a rant regarding the French situation with regard to disability. He laments the absence of strong and binding decisionswhile some of our European neighbors have taken action: “in France, nothing is done. For what ? Because there is no will to coercion, there is no political conviction”.
And the filmmaker to quote a famous replica of The big mop between Bourvil and De Funès: “-What is your shoe size ? -Du like you.” Dominique Farrugia thus claims, not equality, but equity between disabled and able-bodied people. “Do you know how many disabled people there are on a train? Two, first”, he laments.
“Me, it revolts me when, once, I go to vote, in the 16th arrondissement, at the Town Hall, the elevator being broken, I might not vote”, he gets annoyed once more, recalling that France still has 12 million disabled people.
A disability that also puts the couple to the test
In his book, in addition to disability, Dominique Farrugia also mentions the support of his wife, who has become helping in spite of herself. “I often tell myself that I shouldn’t have gotten him into this mess. I didn’t sell him a guy all the time sitting down. We got married, I was up, so there’s lies on the merchandise somewhere, or rather ignorance on my part, of what would happen following the cane”, writes Dominique Farrugia.
The director admits that his wife, present daily by his side, sees especially of him his fallswhich sometimes require calling the fire department to help him up, and his complaints because of his pains.
“I’m not going to lie, we may be in love, it’s hard for a couple to stay that way when we go through it, especially since we have our gaps, like everyone else”, he confesses. “Fortunately, my illness does not hollow them out, on the contrary. My MS unites usbecause the one who lives with a sick person knows the same problems as him, on a practical level I mean”, tempers the producer.
