Press conference for the movie ‘Smuggling’
Director Ryoo Seung-wan (49) expressed his feelings regarding releasing two works in a row in the stagnant film industry following “Mogadishu” (2021) following the Corona 19 pandemic.
At the press preview of the movie ‘Smuggling’ (director Seung-Wan Ryoo) held at CGV Yongsan in Ichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the followingnoon of the 18th, Director Ryu said with great emphasis, “People who make movies should make them well.”

Director Ryu, who directed the films ‘Berlin’ (2013), ‘Veteran’ (2015) and ‘Battleship Island’ (2017), presented ‘Mogadishu’ when the atmosphere in the theater was frozen in the followingmath of the Corona 19 pandemic, drawing 3.61 million people.
Director Ryu, who returned with ‘Smuggling’ following two years, gave his voice to the changed film market. He looked at, “Dreaming of becoming a person who makes films, starting as the youngest in the field, and all the moments of being in the film industry, it has never been difficult.” He added, “We, filmmakers, rather grew up in a crisis.”
Director Ryu recalled, “The reason why Korean films achieved explosive industrial growth was when ‘Shiri’ (1999) was a box office hit during the IMF (1997 financial crisis). At the time, it was economically difficult and the film industry was in crisis.”
Then, he said, “Filmmakers need to think regarding how to develop. In a crisis situation, we need to be more alert while accepting change. In the end, if we stick to the basics, we will get answers.”
The movie ‘Smuggling’, which will be released on the 26th, is a maritime crime action drama in which a life-long battle unfolds in front of people who make a living by rescuing daily necessities thrown into the sea.
