Photo provided by tvN Director Jang Young-woo of tvN’s Saturday-Sunday drama “Queen of Tears” expressed his thoughts on the show’s ending, saying, “I am sincerely grateful to the viewers who laughed and cried with me for two months.
Director Jang Young-woo revealed this during a Q&A session with the production team on the 30th.
Director Jang Young-woo congratulated the actors who completed the work together and told us regarding the making of “Queen of Tears”, including directing secrets and behind-the-scenes details.
“Queen of Tears” is the love story of Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won), the queen of department stores, a third-generation conglomerate of the Queen’s Group, and Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun ), the son of the boss of Yongduri and the prince of supermarkets, married for three years and going through a dizzying crisis and a miraculous restart.
Episode 16, the final episode of the Saturday and Sunday drama series “Queen of Tears”, broadcast on the 28th, ended with a rating of 24.8% (based on Nielsen Korea’s paid households). This is 3.1 percentage points higher than the highest viewership rating of 21.7% for “Crash Landing on You”, which was the highest-grossing drama in tvN history. Additionally, “Queen of Tears” was named as the miniseries that surpassed 20 percent domestic viewership a year following the Friday-Saturday SBS drama series “Model Taxi 2” aired last year.
Below is a Q&A with director Jang Young-woo.
1. You have completed your journey safely and with great interest from the filming of tvN’s “Queen of Tears” to the end. How do you feel following enjoying the beauty of Yujong? I wonder if you feel the popularity.
Thanks to the writer’s interesting and meaningful storyline and the actors’ excellent performances, it was a happy, confident and dependent place. I think the combination of writer, director and actors was really good. The fact that everyone loved the work and made an effort to complete it was a job of great importance to me. I also came to respect the writer and actors more through this work. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the viewers who love the drama.
I didn’t have much time during the broadcast to do post-production work, so I didn’t feel particularly popular, but I heard from people around me that it was fun.
2. Why do you think tvN’s “Queen of Tears” was so popular? Also, I wonder if you expected this kind of reaction.
When I was first offered this work, I liked the fact that it dealt with a family story, which is rare these days, and the author wrote so well in the storyline meaningful themes such as time and memory that I thought would be a fun movie. Additionally, I was co-directing with director Kim Hee-won, whom I trust and rely on the most, and with each very good actor chosen, I felt that I should do work that was worthy of less shame. I honestly didn’t expect it to work this well.
The reason why tvN’s “Queen of Tears” was loved is because, like the line at the end of the drama, “I hope this will be a time to look back at the precious people around you and love to new”, it’s a time when families, couples, friends and lovers can support each other once more, I think it’s because it’s a time when we feel valuable. And I think it’s all thanks to word of mouth from the countless fans and viewers who loved this drama, so I’m really grateful to them.
3. What were the particularly memorable reactions from viewers?
When working on a project, I try to focus on the details and emotions as much as possible, but while working on tvN’s “Queen of Tears,” the most surprising part was how viewers picked up on and read all these details and emotions. I am sincerely grateful that you appreciated not only the director’s intention, but also the very detailed emotional acting of the actor and even the small sets and props that the team painstakingly prepared.
4. tvN’s “Queen of Tears” received widespread praise for its background and visual beauty that maximized the characters’ emotions. I’m curious to know the director’s unique directing secret to maximize the emotional lines of the characters, especially the romantic tension of the Baek Hong couple (Baek Hyun-woo + Hong Hae-in).
There is no particular secret in the production, but as a couple is different from a lover, I wanted to capture the relationship, the distance and the temperature that unites them, and I tried to express them differently depending on the situation and emotions. We created these parts by discussing each scene with the film, lighting and art directors.
5. Many people say that the chemistry between actors Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won, the “Baek and Red couple” who worked together on tvN’s “Queen of Tears”, also stood out. Would you like to salute the chemistry of actors Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won, who together created the story of the Baek-hong couple?
I came to really respect and love actors Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won while working on this work. In terms of acting, both actors received a perfect score of 100 and they were truly excellent actors in terms of attitude and personality towards the other actors and staff. In particular, actors Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won showed chemistry like a married couple, supporting and complementing each other despite their differences. It was heartbreaking and touching to see them wait and listen while the other was going through a difficult time.
6. I’m curious what kind of drama the director will remember from tvN’s “Queen of Tears”, and what kind of drama you would like viewers to remember.
After a year of preparation and filming, I was able to once once more feel the importance of the family around me and the people I care regarding, and I hope that viewers will also feel this warmth. I hope this drama will be remembered fondly by viewers.
7. Finally, say something to the viewers who loved tvN’s “Queen of Tears.”
We sincerely thank the viewers who laughed and cried together for two months.
