The authorities are following the attacker who is still at large.
At least 16 people were killed in multiple shootings in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday night, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
Between 50 and 60 people were injured in the incidents, although it is unclear how many were shot, sources told CNN.
Previously, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating two shooting incidents, according to a Facebook post.
The Lewiston Police Department identified the businesses where the two shootings occurred as Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, police said in a Facebook post.
Schemengees is a bar and grill restaurant, according to its website, and Sparetime Recreation is a recreational bowling alley.
“We are encouraging all businesses to close their doors or shelter in place while we investigate,” the sheriff’s office said.
The suspect remains at large, according to authorities.
Maine State Police said they were responding to a shooting situation in Lewiston, in a post on Facebook.
Minutes later, as authorities investigated the two shooting incidents, a third report of shots fired was reported to have developed.
Lewiston Public Information Officer Derrick St. Laurent told the Sun Journal that another shooting was reported at the Walmart Distribution Center on Alfred A Plourde Pkwy.
Authorities asked residents to shelter in place. “Please stay inside your homes with doors closed,” Maine State Police said in X, “authorities are currently investigating at several locations.”
Lewiston City Councilman Robert A. McCarthy told CNN that schools are currently closed and officials are asking people to shelter in place immediately.
For its part, Central Maine Medical Center confirmed that they are reacting to a shooting event with victims. The medical center said that at the moment there are no details on the number of victims.
The center said they are coordinating with area hospitals to receive patients.
Lewiston is regarding 58 km north of Portland and is located in Androscoggin County.
