Diplomatic sources for Erdogan: Greece remains firmly committed to the solution of the reunification of Cyprus – 2024-07-21 01:02:53

“Greece, in solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus, remains steadfastly committed to the solution of the reunification of Cyprus”, diplomatic sources stress what Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed in his speech on the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Erdogan reiterated the fixed Turkish positions on the Cyprus issue, arguing that Ankara is ready for dialogue for a permanent solution, but also that “the federal solution is not possible for Cyprus”.

“The Greek positions on the Cyprus issue have been clearly formulated and fixed for decades. They are expressed jointly by the Greek Prime Minister and the Greek government. Greece, in solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus, remains steadfastly committed to the solution of the reunification of Cyprus, within the framework of the decisions of the United Nations Organization, and this will continue to do so,” diplomatic sources emphasize.

And they underline: “There is not, nor might be, a question of deviating from this position in accordance with international law.” “Besides, the prime minister will be appointed tonight from Nicosia”, they point out.

“The Cyprus issue remains an unresolved international issue”

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, stressing that the Cyprus issue remains to this day an unresolved international issue of illegal invasion and occupation of an EU member state.

At the same time, in its announcement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlines that “the resolution of the Cyprus issue was and will remain the highest national priority”.

“This year marks half a century since Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus, which led to the occupation and occupation of one-third of the territory of Megalonis by the Turkish army, in violation of fundamental principles of international law,” the Foreign Ministry points out in its statement and adds:

“Greece stands with respect in the sacred memory of the fallen, shares the drama of the missing and the displaced and expresses its gratitude to all those who fought bravely for the defense of Cyprus. And it does not accept empty threats, divisive resolutions and actions taken on the field.”

“The Cyprus issue remains to this day an unresolved international issue of illegal invasion and occupation of a member state of the European Union and the United Nations. The perpetuation of the current status quo, with the existence of occupying troops, as well as the creation of two states, are not acceptable solutions for the Cypriot people”, the announcement states.

“In solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus, Greece remains committed to the solution of the bizonal bi-communal federation, in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations Organization and stands by the effort of the Secretary General of the Organization to start the dialogue with the aim of reuniting Cyprus, on the basis of one sovereignty, one international personality and one citizenship”, the announcement states.

“The resolution of the Cyprus problem was and will remain the highest national priority”, concludes the Foreign Ministry.
