Affaires étrangères, et Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, son homologue saoudien

Since Tuesday, April 5, 2022, Morocco and Saudi Arabia have been pursuing political consultations in Riyadh, the capital of the latter city, as a prelude to the high joint commission to be hosted by the Kingdom in June 2022. Of these consultations, nothing has really leaked out, but what must be said is that they come at a time when relations between the two countries have resumed with renewed vigor, following a few cold years due to the fact that Morocco refused to take the side of Saudi Arabia but also of Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates once morest Qatar, accused in early June 2017 of supporting terrorism.

Indeed, Saudi Arabia has returned to its former conciliatory position towards Rabat, which was reflected in particular in its support at the level of the supreme council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), during its last meeting of the December 14, 2021, to the Moroccanity of the Sahara. We are far, for example, from the maneuvers carried out within the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) so that the organization of the 2026 World Cup falls to Canada, the United States and Mexico instead of the Morocco. Also, the Saudi leaders have provided significant support to Morocco at the level of the Arab League by refusing to take part in the summit that Algeria intended to organize on March 22, 2022 (and that it still intends to organize the 1is November 2022) and above all instrumentalize once morest and once morest the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

In this regard, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, had been refused in January 2022 by Riyadh where he had been sent by its president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to reiterate his invitation. Much is expected, moreover, of the Moroccan-Saudi consultations in terms of investments in Morocco, within the framework of the roadmap drawn up during the tour that King Mohammed VI made in October 2012 in the Gulf. and during which the Kingdom was promised some 5 billion dollars, of which only a tiny part ended up arriving in the coffers of the Moroccan state.

Finally, it should be emphasized that despite the hostile positions once held by Saudi Arabia once morest it, Morocco has never ceased to support the latter at the diplomatic level and constantly demonstrates its intention to stand at her side in the attacks which mainly target her from the Shiite Houthi militias supported by Iran.
