Asuncion, IP Agency.- This Monday, September 2, a diploma course begins to strengthen the new model of penitentiary management. It lasts three months and is aimed at officials from the Ministry of Justice and other key institutions of the Paraguayan penal system.

This is the diploma course “The new model of penitentiary management in Paraguay: Analysis of the Penitentiary System and Criminal Justice from international standards”, promoted by the Center for Judicial Studies (CEJ), in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice, through the Higher Technical Institute of Penitentiary Education and Training (Itsefp), with the support of the American University (UA) and the European Union (EU).

This training aims to strengthen the skills of officials from the Ministry of Justice and other actors linked to the penitentiary system. Through a theoretical and practical approach, participants will be able to identify the main challenges of the penitentiary system and advance in the implementation of a new management model, aligned with international human rights standards.

The programme is structured in two modules: a basic one and an advanced one. The basic module will focus on the fundamental aspects of the penitentiary system, while the advanced module will address the practical problems that underpin this new management model, the Ministry of Justice reported.

The methodology of the diploma includes master classes, debates, guided discussions, problem-based learning and case studies, applying the knowledge and skills acquired in the rehabilitation processes of persons deprived of liberty.

It lasts three months and is aimed at officials from the Ministry of Justice and officials from key institutions of the Paraguayan penal system.

The context of this diploma is framed within the new policies promoted by the Ministry of Justice that seeks to incorporate this new management model with several key approaches: rigorous control of penitentiaries, reform of laws, training of new penitentiary officers, opening of high-security prisons and strengthening of social and labor reintegration programs to reduce recidivism.
