Caused by bacteria, diphtheria is a highly contagious infection. It mainly manifests itself as a specific angina, which can lead to cardiac or neurological complications and be fatal. If, in mainland France, diphtheria has disappeared thanks to significant vaccination coverage, a serious diphtheria epidemic is currently underway in Nigeria. Thus, between May 2022 and early September 2023, the authorities recorded more than 6,000 cases of infections in the country.
