Dimayor and the Colombian Football Federation Face Critical Challenges: The Future of Soccer in Colombia Hangs in the Balance

Dimayor and the Colombian Football Federation will experience this Friday one of the most complicated days in the history of this sport in the country, to the point of calling an extraordinary assembly in which the 36 member teams of the first and second division will be present. .

According to the audit carried out by the SIC, since the beginning of 2023, which contains contracts dating from the founding of the women’s championship (2017), the investigated clubs “have developed a system aimed at limiting free economic competition.”

In the document revealed by the Superintendency, not only the institutions themselves appear, but also leaders of great ascendancy in Colombian football, such as Jorge Enrique Vélez, former president of Dimayor, his successor Fernando Jaramillo, even the president (Eduardo Méndez) and the largest shareholder (Diego Perdomo) of Independiente Santa Fe.

Under this scenario, Dimayor will meet this Friday at 10:00 in the morning to discuss the next step, taking into account that the order of the Ministry of Labor to negotiate with Acolfutpro for improvements in working conditions is also on the table. of the players, following a formal request that remained to be seen in 2019.

The most worrying thing regarding this government intervention is that it might trigger serious consequences for Colombian soccer and its soccer teams, since it is completely prohibited by Fifa for the Federations to have modifications made by order of the state.

If that happens, the statutes state that disaffiliation would occur, which implies that all professional championships in the country would have to be canceled and, incidentally, none of the teams would be able to compete in tournaments organized by Fifa. including the Qualifiers and the World Cup itself.

“Fifa will not recognize any body, or the decisions made by it, of a member federation that has not been elected or appointed by internal election or appointment. Failure to comply with this independence may lead to the suspension and even expulsion of the Fifa member federation, always at the request of the organization’s Council,” the statute reads.

For now, through Dimayor, the FCF will seek mechanisms to prove the innocence of the clubs in the accusations made by the SIC and will jointly prepare a defense strategy on behalf of the people and institutions mentioned in the resolution.

What does the SIC accuse Colombian football of?

To prepare this response, the member clubs of the Major Division will discuss in this Friday’s assembly the four factors why the Superintendency decided to put the magnifying glass on the FPC.

First of all, the SIC points out the irregularities in the hiring model of professional players in the sense of salaries and the duration of the ties since 2017.

Second, the alleged preparation of a table “according to which, according to the category in which the player fit, the salary limits would be determined.”

Third, the negative response to receiving the funds allocated by the Government to the promotion of women’s football, presumably because “said funds would be subject to the surveillance and audit of the control entities.”

Finally, the SIC intends to investigate the granting of television rights, considering that “it would have harmed the development of women’s football” and “it would have been stipulated that only one League match would be broadcast, which might be replaced by another match, even from the Men’s League.
