A survey carried out by Edelman for Microsoft on the digitization of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) showed that 92% of them claim to be in the process of digital transformation. Of this total, 98% of companies recognize the positive impact of technology deployment on business. Data were collected from 312 leaders and decision makers in different sectors of the economy in the period of November 14th and 15th, 2022.

Among the destinations for investments and implementation of digital technologies, respondents cited prioritizing the use of data for business intelligence (item cited by 47% of respondents), recruiting and training talent in technology (41%) and focus on in the acquisition and adoption of new technologies (40%).

Another result shown by the survey, carried out since 2020, indicates that technology makes employee recruitment more efficient. This statement was made by 86% of respondents, who said that technology offers more diversity and quality in recruitment and hiring processes.

With 10 years of experience in the area of Information Technology, software developer Gabriel Bartholo Batista confirms that the adoption of technologies, especially for automating processes in the company, can result in several advantages for the business. He cites as some of these advantages cost reduction, increased efficiency, improved product or service quality, and greater agility in decision-making.

The professional comments that during the process of adopting technologies in the company’s routine, it is common for doubts to arise regarding what to prioritize when adopting automation software, for example. One of the main questions is regarding hiring ready-made software or developing your own system.

In the case of the first option, the main advantage, according to Batista, is the speed of implementation, as the development process has already been concluded and the software is ready for use. “In addition, the initial cost may be lower than the development of its own software, since the company will not need to invest in a specialized team in programming and development”, he clarifies.

Despite this, choosing to develop your own software can also be advantageous, especially in the long term, as it has the possibility of customizing the system according to the company’s needs. “In this case, the company will have full control over the software and will be able to adapt it whenever necessary. However, the development process can take longer and the cost can be higher”, he ponders.

To decide the best option, Gabriel Batista recommends analyzing the company’s needs and resources. “It is important to evaluate the pros and cons of each option and choose the one that best meets the needs of the company and provides a good cost-benefit ratio”, he summarizes.

Digital transformation of companies was accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic

The health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation process of companies. Edelman and Microsoft research has been collecting data since 2020, the first year of the pandemic. According to the authors of the survey, in the first edition of the survey, carried out in 2020 and released in 2021, the data already pointed to a trend of continued adoption of technologies.

In this edition of the survey, 82% of Brazilian MSMEs said they intended to pursue digitalization through new tools. According to the results, at the beginning, the main investment of MSMEs was in communication and collaboration platforms, with 66% of respondents pointing out that video calling software would be the main changes in relation to technology adoption, followed by cloud and remote work, both with 55%. As early as 2022, 51% of MSMEs said they would invest in video call solutions.

The second edition of the survey, carried out at the end of 2021 and released last year, showed that MSMEs were in an accelerated digitalization process. In the comparison between 2021 and 2022, the data shows that many companies managed to solve the initial infrastructure challenges, such as internet connection, software and hardware. While 47% of companies said they had connectivity problems in the first years of the pandemic, the third edition of the survey, recently released, shows that only 29% identified this issue as a problem.
