The year 2024 has already begun, and this gives the opportunity to analyze the last twelve months in different aspects. One of them is a fact that, unfortunately, should not be celebrated: digital scams increased by up to 35% between January and December 2023.

According to information published on the website THE Inside, banking scams led the threats in 2023. The most used movements include stealing or stealing a cell phone to access victims’ banking details via the app. Another possibility is to make a phone call or use a malicious link to obtain credentials, allowing improper transactions to be carried out.

In cases of theft, it is worth remembering that the Federal Government has made the application available Safe cell phone. It interconnects several systems, such as banks and telephone operators, and if something happens to the smartphone, just send an alert to notify all systems.

Other common cases

Scams involving banking applications were not unanimous in 2023. In addition, a form that still causes several victims is false employment, which is often applied to steal data or demand payment of fees for non-existent services.

Despite being a recurrent form of attack, Igor de Andrade, digital security specialist at HostGatordoes not believe that this scam will continue to exist for a long time.

“I don’t think this coup will last for long. Due to the pandemic, this was greatly increased due to the level of unemployment in the country. The forms and attempts have a validity period, so they need to be updated to be able to attract more victims and it is normal for the formats to be recycled”, explained Andrade.

Finally, two other scams that are on the list of most used in 2023 are malicious links sent via SMS or email and machines. While the first option is seen in cases of phishingthe one involving machines is recurrent in places with large crowds due to the contactless payment.

Especially in cases involving links, HostGator’s digital security expert gives some tips on what should be done.

“It is good to keep an eye on, in the case of email, if it uses a valid domain (in the case of Banco do Brasil, for example, if it is @bb.com.br and not @gmail.com), look for errors grammar and see if that number matches the company’s WhatsApp. For promotions, pay attention to the number 0303, which is a requirement by Anatel for telemarketing/promotions”, concludes Andrade.
