When talking regarding cloud gaming, Cloud Gaming usually comes to mind (especially Xbox fans) and Nvidia GeForce. But it is not common to read people talking regarding Sony’s service. The Japanese do not give this the importance that it seems it should have in these times. Because yes, more and more games are consumed via streaming and although the market share is small, it is not something that should be lost sight of.

The fact is that the quality of Cloud Gaming is unquestionable, and this is said by someone who uses it a lot, especially when traveling or when I am away from home. Microsoft seems to have taken its foot off the accelerator a bit with this issue, but it continues to offer an exquisite service in my experience.

Xbox offers better latency, and Playstation better image quality and fps

Today, Digital Foundry has decided to confront both services, and it really seems that there are many factors that tip the balance towards Sony’s service. All this despite the fact that it really moves on Microsoft’s Azure servers. Curious, to say the least.

However, when it comes to what matters, which is latency and performance, Microsoft continues to offer better results. But loses when we talk regarding image quality and the version executed. It seems that Redmond’s service runs the games in its Series S version, while Sony’s runs the PS5 version, offering a better and more optimized version with a better frame rate per second.

There is also an additional twist to this. Not only is video streaming of lower quality on Xbox’s cloud gaming service, but users are receiving Xbox Series S versions of every game I tested, despite Microsoft’s confirmation that xCloud data is built on Series X silicon.

Based on our testing, it makes sense that Xbox’s current cloud implementation uses a virtualized Series S running on Series X silicon.

I still think that the key is latency in this type of services. But it is also true that a version that sometimes drops to 20 fps, as in the case of A Plague Tale, is a negative point that Microsoft should review.
