Will AI soon replace jobs?
Still a matter of science fiction a few years ago, artificial intelligence has nevertheless become a reality. Moreover, with the success of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence has become more democratic. It has penetrated many fields, both artistic and more sensitive, such as health.
With the ever-growing role of AI in society, should we be worried regarding our jobs? Is it possible for an AI to truly take the place of an employee?
Pessimistic studies on the future of jobs
OpenAI researchers, in collaboration with Open Research and the University of Pennsylvania, attempted to identify the most at-risk occupations among a sample of one thousand occupations. According to their study, intellectual professions, and in particular those related to writing such as writers, poets, lyricists and journalists, would be the most affected by the emergence of artificial intelligence.
Legal professions, including paralegals, as well as technical professions such as mathematicians, accountants, blockchain engineers and digital interface designers would not be spared either. Indeed, according to this study, around 80% of businesses would see at least 10% of their tasks automated by technologies such as ChatGPT. The programming and writing professions would be the hardest hit.
Although high-income jobs are generally the most affected by AI, according to a report by Goldman Sachs, up to 300 million jobs worldwide might be eliminated by technologies such as ChatGPT. Job destructions would mainly focus on office jobs, with 46% of administrative tasks and 44% of legal tasks that might be automated by AI, while only 6% of tasks in construction and 4% in the maintenance would be affected.
IBM is already considering job cuts in favor of AI
The American computer giant, meanwhile, has already settled the question. Arvin Krishna, parton of the group, explained during an interview with the Bloomberg Agency that “One can easily imagine that 30% [des emplois ] might be replaced by AI and automation within the next five years.” According to him, it would be above all the support functions that might be the most impacted. Indeed, it is this type of function that might be eliminated with the arrival of new generative artificial intelligence tools.
This change in the organization of the group might lead to the loss of nearly 8,000 jobs over the next 5 years. This would occur “gently” since the development will result in the non-replacement of departures in certain departments such as human resources and in a slowdown in hiring.
AI: combining human labor without replacing it
If IBM has chosen to replace certain jobs with artificial intelligence, this position does not seem to be shared by the majority of other companies. Concerned regarding their images, most of them want to be reassuring on the subject by affirming that the AI will only constitute a support for the work of jobs and is in no way intended to replace them.
And for good reason, the primary objective of AI, in the world of work, is to automate repetitive tasks that take up a lot of time and resources. It is necessary that the AI is put at the service of the work of the employees so that they can concentrate on more essential tasks and thus eliminate the tasks which parasitize the work. For example, in the IT field, it can be beneficial to entrust testing, bug fixing and documentation to an AI. This would allow developers to be able to focus on more complex and creative tasks: this is called a value-added task.
