Virtual reality (VR) dating is becoming more and more popular. This technology allows users to meet people in a virtual environment, where they can interact as if they were physically present with each other.
It’s been more than a decade since Tinder changed the landscape of online dating. Today, the metaverse offers a new era in dating. In the future, relationships may flourish first in the metaverse. “It’s easier to fall in love through virtual reality than through any other digital medium,” says Anthony Tan, CEO and co-founder of Flirtual. VR might offer a new approach to intimacy while addressing some of the drawbacks of existing online dating apps.
For Anthony Tan, the target is also very young: “I’d say most of our users are between 18 and 30 years old. We see the same gender representation as other dating apps. Things that are different though, with our users, is that a lot of them come from online communities, gamers, and sub-communities like anime. We have a lot of LGBTQ users, including myself, because there’s also a space for people to experiment with their gender and sexuality, which is why we’ve been experimenting with the VR option in our sexuality field”.
According to an article in the online magazine GQ France, VR dating platforms are multiplying and offering a variety of experiences. Some are focused on dating, while others simply aim to create social connections.
French dating site Meetic has launched a “meetic VR” feature, which allows users to meet in a virtual environment, using a VR headset. They can thus chat and interact in real time while being immersed in a virtual setting.
According to a survey conducted by Greenlight Insights, a company specializing in virtual reality, the VR dating market will grow rapidly in the coming years. This is because technology might help overcome some of the drawbacks of traditional online dating, such as the lack of social interaction and the difficulty in getting a clear picture of the other person’s personality.
However, some experts point out that VR dating can also present risks, especially in terms of security and privacy. Indeed, users may find themselves exposed to inappropriate behavior or even dangerous situations in a virtual environment where the boundaries between real and virtual are blurred.
There have been several cases of sexual assault in virtual reality reported in recent years, particularly in the United States and Europe. Virtual reality platforms like Oculus VR and HTC Vive have zero-tolerance policies for illegal and inappropriate activity on their platforms, but it can be difficult to detect and prevent such behavior.
