Thanks to the confinement in 2020, e-commerce in Morocco was ranked 95th out of 152 countries in the world ranking of e-commerce. The following year, it occupied the 69th place in the world and it has continued to develop in several sectors to generate revenues of which the country does not have to be ashamed.

The Covid-19 pandemic and containment have advanced the advent of new technologies in Morocco more than significantly. As the former Minister MHE (Moulay Hafid Elalamy) had also declared at the time, this is a historic turning point for the country which has “made a technological leap of 5 years” in a few months (March to September 2020) to see a significant expansion without slackening since and in particular through e-commerce whose revenues generated by this sector will reach 1.88 billion dollars at the end of 2023. Ultimately, this projection testifies to the growing confidence of companies and consumers in the opportunities offered by e-commerce. At the same time, a prospective analysis over the period from 2023 to 2027 (Source: HCP), forecasts annual growth of 13.6% for e-commerce in Morocco. These promising figures indicate that online transactions will reach a total amount of $3.13 billion by 2027. This positive trend is fueled by the growing preference of Moroccan consumers for online shopping, as well as the continued expansion the technological and logistical infrastructure that supports e-commerce.

Which sectors are concerned?

As we know, the transactions carried out online in Morocco are spread over different sectors widely represented on local or international platforms (Jumia, Avito, the Inditex group for fashion and many other platforms which are recruiting more and more Internet users through social networks. Currently, the electronics and media sector accounts for the largest share with 47.9% of transactions. Fashion ranks second with 20%, followed by toys, leisure and DIY with 12.3%.Furniture and household appliances represent 10.1% of transactions, while food and personal care reach 9.7%.This diversification of sectors demonstrates the growing presence of e-commerce in different aspects of the daily life of Moroccan consumers.

What regarding growth?

In Morocco as everywhere else, the growth of e-commerce was particularly remarkable during the confinement period in 2020. During this period, e-commerce recorded an impressive growth of 46%, underlining its potential and its growing role in the economy of Morocco. This development has allowed businesses to continue operating despite restrictions, while providing consumers with a convenient alternative for their purchases. It is also a huge sociological leap that confinement has generated, by forcing all connected consumers to consume differently. And today ? Morocco’s e-commerce growth prospects are supported by growing investment in the sector. Moroccan businesses recognize the benefits of selling online, such as expanding their geographic reach, accessing more customers, and reducing operational costs. Moroccan consumers, meanwhile, are increasingly comfortable with shopping online, benefiting from the convenience, diversity of products and services, and ease of price comparison… and finally, time saving! E-commerce still has a bright future ahead of it, driven by sustained growth and constant investment by both businesses and consumers. Can we already hope that this will be a future key sector of the economy? This is obviously to be desired.
