In the rapidly evolving business world, new approaches are constantly emerging and redefining the way businesses are structured and managed. One such approach is “free enterprise,” a model that promotes personal responsibility, employee autonomy and continuous innovation. Digital technology has played a key role in implementing this concept.

What is “liberated enterprise”?

The concept of the “liberated enterprise” was first introduced in 1993 by Tom Peters in his book “Liberated company: Libération Management”. Afterwards, the term gained popularity in France thanks to the work “Liberty & Co” written by Isaac Getz and Brian M. Carney, becoming an essential reference in liberated enterprise.

The liberated enterprise can be defined as a form of organization in which employees enjoy complete freedom and responsibility in taking initiatives and actions that they consider necessary.

Companies that operate in this way generally need to have a strong internal culture, and to achieve liberation, companies typically have the following characteristics:

  • A combination of happiness and productivity at work
  • A vision carried by exemplary and humble charismatic leaders
  • Shared values
  • The end of a long control cycle
  • Employee autonomy
  • Reversal of the management pyramid

This concept is common today, especially during epidemics, when management grants more autonomy to employees under a teleworking model.

Why is such an organizational model no longer difficult to implement today?

Digital tools as an accelerator

  1. The introduction of digital networks

Instant messaging platforms and social networks such as WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram…, promote transparent communication between employees. Organizational barriers are reduced, encouraging the open exchange of ideas and information. Additionally, these social networks help employees get more external information and more inspiration. Corporate intranets can also provide information sharing platforms for employees to access and share internal data, significantly increasing employee autonomy and collaboration.

  1. Powerful productivity tools

Some organizations are now choosing to work remotely permanently or adopt a hybrid model. To help businesses adapt, many online software programs help modernize project management (Trello, Slack, Confluence, etc.). We can view our projects from all angles, which considerably increases flexibility. By encouraging transparency, accountability, and autonomy through visual workspaces, managers no longer have to carefully supervise their teams. The result ? More satisfied employees.

  1. Self-learning tools

Employees have more and more online platforms to improve their skills (MOOC, COOC, etc.), where you can learn all the skills you want. Often these expert-led courses are of high quality by offering high flexibility to the learner. New learning modes are emerging, such as SPOCs, which are tailored to business needs and can target key skills while adapting to the organization’s environment and professional challenges. They can also be personalized according to the level and needs of each learner, helping to avoid rigid learning models.

Corporate liberation is a way to humanize work and, as we have already mentioned, it has many advantages. For this organizational model to be better integrated into the company, more practical and pragmatic digital tools must go hand in hand with it.
