Difficult draw for Thiem in Melbourne, Ofner against local hero

This was the result of the draw for the Australian Open on Thursday. The Canadian is seeded number 27 in Melbourne. Austria’s number one Sebastian Ofner will first play once morest Australian local hero Thanasi Kokkinakis. If he wins, the Styrian might face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, ATP number 13, in the second round.

Thiem and Auger-Aliassime first faced each other. On the way to his US Open triumph, Thiem won the round of 16 in three sets in September 2020. Ofner and Kokkinakis (ranking No. 65) have never played once morest each other at the ATP level, but met in the second round of qualifying for the Australian Open in 2019. Back then, Kokkinakis had the upper hand in two sets.

Ofner and Thiem are the only Austrians in the main individual competition of the tournament that begins on Sunday in the South Australian metropolis.
