Experiments have shown that the dietary supplement copes with the main signs of neurodegeneration in the body and provides a protective effect, due to which it can prevent the development of the disease. It is well known that its use is completely safe for humans. The discovery offers surprising possibilities in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and possibly other neurodegenerative diseases.
Scientists from Rush University discoveredthat the muscle building supplement beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) is effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Typically bodybuilders use HMB for muscle growth and strength gains. The supplement is considered safe for humans and has no known side effects.
The researchers conducted experiments with mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. HMB supplementation successfully suppressed the amount of toxic protein aggregation in brain tissue and also increased neuronal growth factors to support cognitive function. The accumulation of proteins in the brain and cognitive decline are considered the main signs and symptoms of neurodegeneration, and a sharp decrease in neurotrophic factors is commonly seen in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
“We found that following oral administration, HMB enters the brain to restore these beneficial factors and neural connections, which improves memory and learning functions in mice, along with a decrease in toxic protein aggregations,” the scientists commented.
Now they intend to evaluate the effect of HMB in clinical studies, following which it will be possible to judge the possibilities of the supplement for the treatment and prevention of disease in the human body. It is highly likely that HMB will be effective in other neurodegenerative diseases as well, however this remains to be seen.
Recently, in another study, scientists have found another potential way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease – they found compounds in coffee that block the aggregation of protein plaques.
