One year following receiving their equipment, a connected retinograph, the Dieppe hospital (Seine-Maritime) is able to offer consultations for diabetic people wishing to carry out screening for their retina.

Indeed, among the complications linked to diabetes, vision deterioration is possible, which can lead to blindness. Since the beginning of November 2023, appointments have been possible. The only conditions: being diabetic and being mobile, that is to say being able to sit down in order to carry out the screening.

A screening in five minutes

As Emilie Latour, medical administrative assistance and coordinator of the telemedicine service, explains, “these consultations are planned in response to the desertification of ophthalmologists. We do them to find out if there is eye damage due to diabetes.”

To identify a potential anomaly, screening consists of taking photos of each eye. Photos which are subsequently sent to ophthalmologists working at the Rouen university hospital center. “If there is a need for a consultation with an ophthalmologist, we can refer the patient to the university hospital or to the hospital with Dr. Joufflineau who consults on Thursday morning,” continues Emilie Latour. We want to avoid the patient having to travel many kilometers and leave the department to receive treatment. » Concerning Dr Joufflineau, who had nevertheless announced his retirement, he takes care of hospitalized patients and also those who have had a retinogram and who need an in-depth consultation.

In the office, the state-certified nurse, Candice Roussel, explains how the screening takes place: “The patient sits in front of the device and must remove their glasses or mask if they have them. This is a green dot system to follow with your eyes. Three photos are taken for each eye, then a mosaic is made and then sent everything to the University Hospital.”

If all goes well, the screening only lasts a few minutes. In the event of a complication, one of the signs showing an eye problem may be the appearance of a “cluster of grapes in the vessels of the eye”, specifies the healthcare professional. Ultimately, the hospital hopes to offer this type of device for other screenings such as AMD for example.

Retinography consultations accessible by appointment via Doctolib, from the hospital secretariat or on recommendation from general practitioners. Appointments are possible on Tuesday and Thursday followingnoons from 1:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.
