The Minister of Finance, Ricardo Bonilla, revealed that Diego Cancino will no longer be the director of the Special Assets Society (SAE). His announced appointment would have fallen due to the complaint against him for an alleged case of sexual harassment that he would have carried out against the current official of the Ministry of the Interior, Viviana Vargas.
In an interview with W Radio, Minister Bonilla said that there was never an official appointment, which is why he implied that Cancino will no longer be the director because “the decree was never there.”
“There has never been a decree naming him, the only thing there was was a publication of a resume,” was the short response he gave to the media.
When it becomes official that Cancino will no longer be the director of the SAE, the name of who will occupy the highly relevant position of the entity in charge of managing the assets in process and with domain forfeiture will have to be given.
The complaint that left him out of the SAE
Cancino’s world came crashing down when Viviana Vargas decided to break her silence and publicly denounce him for an alleged case of sexual harassment that occurred during a party that took place at the suspect’s apartment.
Conduct that was reaffirmed by the politician himself in messages that he later sent to the woman apologizing for his attitude. Something that he also implied in one of his last statements where he said that he was not harassing her but rather “wooing.”
“As I expressed to Viviana in private messages that she has made public, I sincerely regret any conduct on my part that may have been offensive to a woman whom I have known for several years as a human rights defender,” was what he clarified. Cancino in a press release dated October 27.
Given the seriousness of the complaint, the Attorney General’s Office has been carrying out an investigation since November 1 to determine the responsibilities of the former Deputy Minister General of the Interior and former councilor of Bogotá for the Alianza Verde party.
Prosecutor 219 of the Crimes against Gender-Based Violence group is the one who assumed the investigation for the crime of violent sexual act.

**Interview on Diego Cancino’s Withdrawal from SAE Position**
**Interviewer (I):** Good afternoon, and thank you for joining us today. We have with us political analyst Maria Lopez to discuss the recent developments surrounding Diego Cancino and the Special Assets Society. Maria, thank you for being here.
**Maria Lopez (M):** Thank you for having me.
**I:** Let’s dive in. Diego Cancino, the former vice minister of the Interior, recently faced allegations of sexual harassment, leading to his withdrawal from the position of director at the Special Assets Society. What details can you share about these allegations?
**M:** The allegations were made by Viviana Vargas, who is currently an official at the Ministry of the Interior. This situation has raised serious concerns not only due to the nature of the allegations but also about Cancino’s anticipated leadership role at the SAE.
**I:** The Minister of Finance, Ricardo Bonilla, mentioned that there was never an official appointment for Cancino. What implications does this have for the situation?
**M:** The fact that there was no formal decree appointing Cancino is significant. It suggests that the government was perhaps preemptively addressing the situation before it escalated further. Minister Bonilla’s statement implies that the government is being cautious in choosing its leaders, especially in light of such serious accusations.
**I:** It seems this incident has broader implications for the government and its leadership appointments. How might this affect public trust in the administration?
**M:** Absolutely. Cases of harassment have a profound impact not just on the individuals involved but also on the reputation of the institutions. If the government appears to tolerate such behavior—or is seen as mishandling allegations—it risks losing public confidence. The administration will need to take proactive measures to foster a safe and respectful environment in public service.
**I:** What steps should the government take moving forward to address these kinds of allegations effectively?
**M:** Transparency is key. The administration should establish clear protocols for handling allegations of harassment, ensure that victims feel safe to come forward, and communicate openly about the actions taken in response to such incidents. Additionally, promoting training and awareness around workplace conduct can help prevent future occurrences.
**I:** Thank you, Maria, for your insights on this critical issue. As this story develops, it will be important to monitor the responses from both the government and the public.
**M:** Thank you for having me. It’s a vital conversation we need to keep having.
**I:** Absolutely. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
