Died the first and only chairman of the KGB of the RSFSR Viktor Ivanenko

The first and only chairman of the KGB of the RSFSR, Viktor Ivanenko, died at the age of 75. This was announced by the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Alexander Khinshtein.

“Sad news. At the age of 76, the first (and only) chairman of the KGB of the RSFSR, Viktor Ivanenko, died,” Mr. Khinshtein wrote in his Telegram channel. The cause of death has not been reported.

Viktor Ivanenko was appointed chairman of the KGB in May 1991. During the August putsch, he opposed the GKChP. In November 1991, the then President of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, transformed the KGB of the RSFSR into the Federal Security Agency (AFB). In 1992, Viktor Ivanenko spoke out once morest the president’s initiative to unite the AFB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

After he was fired from the state security agencies. Since February 2004, Viktor Ivanenko has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arctic Trade and Transport Company.
