bam Die Toten Hosen thundered over the Gurten hill from the very first second. The final concert of this great Gurten festival is overwhelming from the start. One thing is immediately obvious: now we’re going to celebrate “until the ground trembles here!”, as Campino roars into the microphone several times.
As soon as the first song “All say that” the flags are flapping in the wind, smoke is rising and around 20,000 people are singing along to every line. It takes less than ten minutes for the first pants fan to be carried on hands by the audience to the edge of the stage. Die Toten Hosen deliver everything the Gurten heart desires. Those big sing-along anthems, “Old Fever,” “Bonnie & Clyde,” “Love Song,” “Whim of Nature,” they all come in the first half hour. And everything, as always, with just enough sass and punch for a Sunday evening with friends that just makes you want to explode once more.

Some might turn their noses up at this band. Others love them downright dearly. Maybe that’s why the well-aged Toten Hosen are actually the best choice for the end of this 40th Gurten Festival. Because there are at least two types of Gurten types. Those who are more inclined towards fun and climb up Bern’s local mountain with goosebumps, mainly because of the alcohol, the food, friendly socializing and boisterous hopping concerts. And then there are those who come primarily because of the music, to be carried away by new trends or to listen to legendary, robust bands.
And somehow the Toten Hosen, with their popular mood rock, with their punk hits and football anthems, seem to unite everything that the different Gurten hearts beat for.

After all, the people of Düsseldorf are on the Gurten for the fourth time. Coincidentally, they were last there for their 30th birthday. And being just a year older than this festival is a nice detail in the harmonious relationship between the band and this festival.
And it’s a good relationship. This is also evident in this concert – right up to the end. Like Campino saying “Guuuuuurten!” at the top of his lungs. screams into the microphone; one certainly believes this affection for him. And it goes without saying that the 20,000 love him back just as firmly. While it gradually gets darker, a few Pyros light up here and there, the pants continue to thunder at full force: “Everything out of love”, “Make a wish”, “Here comes Alex”. Campino is able to keep the tension going for almost two hours. After a t-shirt change, he seems even fresher than before, and the usual robust, powerful band doesn’t let up until the end. There are still almost half a dozen encores like “Paradise”, “Days like these”, the medical cover “Schrei nach Liebe”, “Freunde” and the football anthem “You never walk alone”.
But even on these days there comes a time when even the longest concert of the festival has to come to an end. At 10:12 p.m. the time had come. (mbu)
