‘Die Hard’: Bruce Campbell Criticizes Iconic Film: Who Else Should Have Been the Hero

Hysteria is set to debut on Peacock in the fall. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Campbell spoke about what drew him to the project’s script and referenced the iconic film’s protagonist.

“The character caught my attention because he’s a man who has to cope (…). He’s a sensible man trying to figure out crazy phenomena in a small American town. I like that he’s not ready for it. Small towns are not prepared for a pandemic or strange phenomena. They don’t know how to cope.”

This, according to Campbell, builds tension.

“You want to put someone in a situation who isn’t ready for it. Like Ash in the movie ‘Evil Dead’ – he’s had no training. He’s not a soldier, he’s not CIA. He’s a mechanic who has to save the world. That’s interesting!”

“Die Hard” and Willis got flak in the context of this type of hero.

“The message of ‘Die Hard’ is wrong. The guy in the air vent shouldn’t have been Bruce Willis. He’s an ex-cop. The writers took the easy way out. They could have put an accountant in there who’s never fired a gun before but is very intelligent. And I’m interested in that.”

A remake of a 1981 horror film. A group of friends go to a deserted, isolated cottage for the weekend. They want to have a good time, but they don’t know what awaits them. They find a secret book and read the invocation inside for fun.
