Didier Reynders: Resettlement and European Commission Oust

No crisis at MR, it was a Didier Reynders who was neither upset nor vengeful who appeared on the airwaves of the Première this Monday morning. The current European Commissioner for Justice was ousted from the MR’s European list for the 2024 elections in favor of Charles Michel.

Resettlement in sight for Didier Reynders: following being ousted from the European list by Charles Michel, he is a candidate for a high international position

The liberal confided this Monday that he learned of this choice on Saturday evening, following a call from his party president Georges-Louis Bouchez. Charles Michel then called him straight away. “I made the proposal to be available at the European level for the parliament but also to continue the work within the commission, or even in other European structures, because what I want is to continue to invest in the issues that I have been dealing with for several years: democracy, the rule of law…”

”I say that now we must embark on the campaign. I will be attending a number of events […] I have been supporting and sometimes leading the reform movement for enough years, that will not prevent me from supporting its ideas,” he continued.

On LN24 this Monday, Georges-Louis Bouchez declared that the commissioner might still have a role within the liberal party. “That’s very nice of him,” replies the person concerned. “It’s a good thing but I’m from the MR. If I am European Commissioner, it is because my political party wanted me to occupy this position”.

Didier Reynders is now a candidate for the post of Secretary of the Council of Europe. “It is the Belgian government which must nominate me. It’s been 10 years since people talked regarding the possibility of me going to the European Commission. (…) I am available either for the electoral issue, which will obviously not be the case, or to act in the commission or in the council,” he insisted.
