Didier Reynders would see himself reappointed for a new mandate at the European Commission following 2024, or even take over the presidency of the MR, he confided on Sunday on the set of “Puncheurs” of which he was the guest.
Asked regarding his electoral plans in view of next June’s vote, the Belgian European Commissioner in charge of Justice and Consumer Protection said his “availability” to appear on the liberal list for the European elections.
But his deep wish, he openly admitted, would nevertheless be to continue within the European executive for a second term.
Also probed on his possible interest in the Sixteen following June 9, the former Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs declined this possibility, insisting once more on its “first and foremost European availability”.
A surprise, however: the former president of the French-speaking liberals from 2004 to 2011 did not rule out on Sunday running once more for the presidency of the party, which must be renewed in a little less than a year.
With this in mind, Didier Reynders shared his ambition on Sunday “to bring together forces well beyond our current formation” to go from 20% of the vote today to 30%, he said, thus taking up the objective already stated in 2019 by the current president of the Liberals, Georges-Louis Bouchez.
“The MR might then be essential”, noted Mr. Reynders.
