Placing a wet phone in uncooked rice has been a popular method of drying it for years. This method is recommended by bloggers and experts.

But Apple recently responded to the belief that rice is the best solution in an Apple Support page on its website.

What you should not do

If your iPhone gets wet, you may see a liquid detection alert. Charging and connecting accessories will only be possible when the connector, cable ends and accessory are dry, according to a message from Apple dated January 8.

“Don’t put your wet iPhone in a bag of rice. This could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone,” Apple says in what not to do.

The tech giant also advises users not to dry the iPhone using an external heat source, such as a hairdryer, or compressed air.

Inserting a foreign object, such as a cotton swab or paper towel, into the connector is a bad idea, he adds.

What to do

If your iPhone or accessory gets wet, Apple suggests unplugging the cable from your device first and unplugging the other end of the cable from the power adapter or accessory.

“Do not reconnect the cable until your iPhone and the cable are completely dry,” Apple writes.

To remove any liquid inside the device, gently tap your iPhone against your hand with the connector facing down.

Wait at least 30 minutes for it to dry, then try charging it using a Lightning or USB-C cable, or connecting an accessory.

It is best to leave it in a dry, ventilated place for up to a day, until you no longer see the liquid detection alert.

“You can retry charging or connecting an accessory during this period,” Apple adds. “It can take up to 24 hours to fully dry.”

Is your phone dry, but still not charging? Apple recommends unplugging the adapter cable and unplugging the adapter from the wall, if possible. It is then advisable to reconnect them to see if things have changed.

Emergency charging

In an emergency, you may need to charge your iPhone when it’s wet.

“If you reconnect your iPhone to the cable or accessory, you have the option to override liquid detection and recharge your iPhone in an emergency,” Apple says.

You can also use a wireless charger, but make sure the back of the device is dry before placing it on your charger.
