In this comparison we decided to test the following, can the camera in one of the most popular budget phone models of 2022 the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G match that in the more expensive Galaxy S22 Plus?
You can probably already guess that there will be a difference, but the question is whether it will be large enough to justify spending a lot of cash on the higher-priced model, or whether it will be something you can neglect or is the gap just too big?
The two main things to note here are the lack of a zoom lens in the budget phone, as well as the sensor that is much smaller than that used in the flagship phone’s main camera.
Instead you get totally useless macro and depth cameras on the A53 that aren’t in the flagship that tell you everything you need to know regarding how important it is for Samsung to consider these lenses as worthless.

Is there a difference in photos taken under ideal conditions?
You can clearly see the difference between the two photos taken during the day as the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G features these highly saturated colors, while the Galaxy S22 Plus comes with a more tonal look.
The second difference is that the cheaper model is over-sharpened as you see halos around tree branches that don’t look natural at all.
The last major difference we notice is the abundance of different colors on the more expensive S22 Plus model, while the mid-range A53 often paints the whole picture in this dominant hue, overriding subtle nuances of color.
We can definitely say we like photos from the S22 Plus here and that’s pretty clear, the mid-range A53 5G delivers over-saturated photos, plus it loses a lot of detail.
Photography in low light
In night scenes the differences in image quality are magnified, the A53 5G captures much less detail and looks grainy, while the S22 Plus still gets crisp details and handles dynamic range better.

While we weren’t entirely convinced that the flagship phone is much better during the day, the nighttime photos leave no hesitation that the difference in favor of the S22+ is indeed significant.
What regarding the wide lens?
While both phones are listed with a wide 13mm camera, the A53 5G has a slightly broader perspective.
Zoom Capabilities
Having a dedicated zoom lens on premium phones was the only differentiator that was supposed to convince users to buy a more expensive phone, but how much difference does it make in real life?
Portrait photography
Portrait mode is one such magical feature that can turn an ordinary “phone photo” into something like a photo taken with a professional camera.

The first compromise that the A53 5G offers here is that it doesn’t present an image at optical zoom very well, which is a big problem most of the time you might want to focus a selfie on one person and you want to get close to them and you can’t do that with a 1X camera.
But even comparing the 1X portrait mode quality, you see that the budget phone makes some weird mistakes and doesn’t blur the entire background properly, in the first image above huge portions of the background are left blurred, while the flagship model handles that flawlessly, you also have a difference In color, the S22+ chooses more tonal colors versus the strongly saturated colors of the A53.
And take a look at the 3X zoom shots on the S22+, it looks so cool there’s no way to get it with the A53 5G.
selfies
While we saw some significant differences in image quality with the rear cameras, selfies taken with these two phones look quite similar.
Both have an excellent amount of detail and pleasing colors, so you won’t have much to lose in the selfie game if you opt for the cheaper Samsung Galaxy A53 5G.
Summary
So we saw the pictures and we saw the differences, and in some cases these were big differences, but is the price difference enough for these advantages at the camera level?
It’s hard to say because the camera and its quality are not of equal importance to everyone. If you value a good-looking photo we think the difference in quality is enough to justify buying a flagship phone. The lack of detail when using the main cameras on the Galaxy A53 is a serious blow to image quality, as It does not match the magnification ability of the main model.
If all you do is look at your photos on a small phone screen you probably won’t notice most of these differences, in those cases you will appreciate the improvements made to the dynamic range in the A53 5G, and that will suffice.
