Did you bariatric? Know what to do to not gain weight again

Bariatric surgery is a method of great importance for the health and quality of life of obese people. However, for the surgery to be efficient and for the patient to maintain the ideal weight, some care must be followed.

Known as stomach reduction, bariatric surgery is indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for people with a body mass index (BMI) above 35 kg/m² who suffer from other health problems, such as sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, increased blood fats and joint problems.

Patients with a BMI greater than 40 kg/m² who have not been successful in losing weight following two years of clinical treatment are also recommended for the procedure.

Best way to lose weight is to reduce calories, study finds

The operation is invasive and, if the patient is careless, he may gain weight once more. “Obesity is a chronic disease, that is, it has no cure. The patient must be aware that it will be necessary to adopt a new lifestyle following the surgery,” explains surgeon Fábio Rodrigues, who works in Manaus (AM).

See behaviors that should be incorporated into the routine to maintain the bariatric result and not gain weight once more.

1. Understand that weight control must be maintained

The patient’s weight loss usually occurs in the first 18 months following bariatric surgery, this period is called the honeymoon and is characterized by great adherence to a balanced diet and physical exercise.

However, when the intended goal is reached, it is common for the patient to stop following the prescribed treatment, allowing himself to “escape”. If they become constant, weight regain can occur due to metabolic and psychological disorders.

2. The relationship with food needs to be changed

Psychological follow-up is essential for the new moment. Often food is used to fill emotional gaps, patients should know what their triggers are and work on them to avoid weight gain.

“The patient needs to have a behavioral change for him to maintain the success of the surgery. Have a more active life with healthier eating habits”, says surgeon Fábio Rodrigues.

3. Multidisciplinary follow-up is necessary

According to the doctor, some studies show that patients who are monitored by a multidisciplinary team are 60% less likely to gain weight once more. Ideally, the team should have a bariatric surgeon, an endocrinologist, a psychologist, a nutritionist, a physiotherapist and a physical education professional.

“The results are more satisfactory when the patient is accompanied by multidisciplinary professionals. At first, consultations need to be monthly. Afterwards, the patient can start going three times a year to review results and habits”, suggests Fábio Rodrigues.
