Did the referee unjust Real Madrid against Manchester City? | Football

The excitement and controversy surrounding the refereeing decisions did not disappear from the second leg of the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Manchester City.

City won the first leg match that took place at their home 4-3 following an exciting match as well.

The match witnessed two refereeing cases that deserved to be stopped, the first in the ninth minute when Italian referee Daniele Orsato warned City player Aymeric Laporte and Real Madrid player Luka Modric, following a clash between them.

And Pavel Fernandez, an analyst for Spanish Radio Marca, says that Laporte deserved a direct expulsion and not a warning because he hit Modric.

As for the second case, it was in the 54th minute when Modric passed a long forward ball to his colleague Vinicius, who took off and put City defender Kyle Walker in his back and almost got away with the goal, as only the goalkeeper was in front of him, but Walker pushed him with his right elbow in the back and dropped him to the ground without the referee counting any violation .

Some see it as a clear violation and that Walker deserved to be expelled, and the fact is that it is a clear violation already worthy of calculating a direct free kick for Real Madrid, but only the City defender’s warning is the optimal punishment in it and we will explain why in the following lines:

The expulsion is due in such cases if the player has a real chance to score a goal, and this is clarified by the Football Law in Article 12 “Errors and Misconduct”, with 4 considerations that should not be absent from them, namely:

First: The distance from the goal is in favor of Vinicius, who was on the edge of the penalty area.

Second: facing the goal, which is also present.

Third: control or the possibility of controlling the ball, which is also available where the ball would have been within the reach of Vinicius if he had not been pushed.

Fourth: The number of defenders and their position, a consideration that was not in the Brazilian player’s favour, as there were two defenders directly behind him, one of whom might have caught him and cut the ball. To “block a promising opportunity” and punish by warning the defender only.
