While Jürgen Klopp accused Paul Tierney of unacceptable remarks once morest him during Liverpool-Tottenham (4-3) on Sunday, the Premier League referees association refuted any outburst from the referee following reviewing his match. An old dispute exists between the German coach and the English official.
The sequence still made the front page of the main English media this Monday morning. At the end of an electric Liverpool-Tottenham poster on Sunday in the Premier League (4-3 victory for the Reds), Jürgen Klopp allowed himself a strong chambering once morest the fourth referee just following the winning goal scored by Diogo Jota.
An epidermal reaction, which was sanctioned with a yellow card by the main referee, Paul Tierney, while the German coach returned to his area – while slamming his hamstrings. And that Klopp justified by recalling a supposed long-standing relentlessness of this official towards the Reds.
“We had our story with Mr. Tierney. I really don’t know what this man has once morest us,” he railed at Sky Sports before mentioning a liability during a Liverpool-Tottenham dating back to December 2021, in which Harry Kane escaped an obvious red card for Klopp. “I don’t know what his problem is with me, but we need an objective referee,” he had already fumed.
“We strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were inappropriate”
“I didn’t say swear words or anything useless, claimed Klopp. (…) I was punished by stretching my hamstrings. But what he told me when he gave me a yellow card is unacceptable.” Could Paul Tierney have had a few unfortunate words towards Jürgen Klopp on Sunday? This possibility was brushed aside by the PGMOL, the association of Premier League referees, who half-whispered the German coach of lying.
“Premier League officials are registered in all matches via a communication system. And having fully replayed the audio of referee Paul Tierney during today’s (Sunday) match, we can confirm that he acted professionally throughout the match, including when he gave the warning to the manager of Liverpool. Therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were inappropriate.”
The FA have already announced that they will promptly review Klopp’s post-match comments regarding Tierney, and rule on his allegations. In the meantime, the Reds have made a good saving in the Premier League standings thanks to their success in the London derby: Liverpool have doubled Tottenham and now occupy fifth place in the Championship, qualifying for the Europa League.
