Did Netanyahu change his position on the Philadelphia axis after Biden’s call?

This comes in response to a report published by the Washington Post, which said that Netanyahu offered “some concessions” in his recent conversation with US President Joe Biden, which dealt, among other things, with negotiations to reach a ceasefire deal in Gaza.

A political source explained, according to the Hebrew website “Ynet”, that “Netanyahu has not changed his position regarding the necessity of Israeli control and presence in the Philadelphi Corridor” on the Egyptian border.

Also, Haaretz newspaper quoted an unnamed political source as saying that Benjamin Netanyahu did not change his positions after the phone call with Biden last night.

The White House reported on Wednesday that Biden discussed the ceasefire agreement in Gaza by phone with Netanyahu.

“Biden and Netanyahu discussed the ceasefire agreement, the release of hostages, and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions,” White House press secretary Emily Simmons wrote in a post on Twitter, with Vice President Kamala Harris joining the conversation.

The US President said on Tuesday that the Palestinian factions movement “is withdrawing from the proposed truce plan with Israel” aimed at releasing prisoners held in Gaza and stopping the fighting that has been ongoing for more than 10 months in the Strip.

“The proposed settlement is still on the table, but you can’t predict anything,” Biden said in response to questions from reporters at Chicago airport after speaking at the Democratic National Convention. “Israel says it can reach an outcome. The factions are now retreating,” he added.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned that the ongoing negotiations on a truce in the Gaza Strip “may be the last chance to reach a ceasefire.”

It is noteworthy that after two days of talks in Doha this week, the mediation countries announced the presentation of a new proposal that “reduces the gaps” between Israel and the factions’ movement in order to achieve a ceasefire and release Israeli prisoners.

Netanyahu and the factions exchanged accusations of thwarting efforts to reach an agreement.

The factions movement issued a statement holding Netanyahu responsible for thwarting the mediators’ efforts and obstructing reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Meanwhile, a statement issued by Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the latter “insists on remaining in the Philadelphi corridor,” on the border between Gaza and Egypt, despite the opinions of Israeli negotiators that this request prevents any possibility of an agreement.
