On social networks, many Internet users cannot stomach seeing their “Big Tasty” decrease in size while remaining at the same price. McDonald’s explains that there are now two formats for this sandwich, but this clarification does not apply.
The Big Tasty has been at the heart of a controversy for several days. On social networks, McDonald’s customers are protesting regarding the revision of the size of the hamburger which nevertheless remains at the same price.
The accusation of “shrinkflation”, – this technique which consists of reducing quantities by raising prices and without informing the consumer – has even been dropped by Internet users who do not hesitate to pay the same bill for a sandwich which now displays 663 kcal, compared to 868 kcal previously, with the very visible effect of changing the type of bread.
“Lol, the big tasty should just be called tasty, it’s definitely smaller now,” reacts Kay on X (ex-Twitter).
“I swear I’m so excited, I asked my sister for a big tasty (she works at McDonald’s), she told me that they had changed the bread of the big tasty and that as a result they were smaller …It was the only burger that appealed to you at least at McDonald’s,” protests Lemynho.
Two versions instead of one
The Parisian was able to consult an internal document from the fast food chain confirming that this change started at the end of August in many restaurants and will be generalized in October.
The group actually decided, without making much noise, to create two versions of its Big Tasty: one for big appetites with two steaks stacked on top of each other, a second with a single meat. But this explanation does not work.
“Under the pretext that now we can have a double big tasty, this allows us to reduce the size of the sandwich without changing the price!” protests Flooo in a post published under X (ex-Twitter).
“We have in no way reduced the portions of our recipes on the permanent or temporary menu of our restaurants. We have evolved the Big Tasty recipe with a new bread (…). The evolution of this recipe, not comparable with the old one, profoundly changes the perception of the product, now higher and customizable,” explains the group.
On son site, two Big Tasty now appear on the menu, with one meat and two meats, with the mention “New format”. But the first is displayed at 868 kcal and not 663 kcal as revealed The Parisianthe second is 927 kcal.
Error (or absence) of clear communication or deliberate strategy, McDonald’s even provided language elements to respond to customers who would not be satisfied to see portions reduced.
“Highlight that these new formats retain the iconic taste of Big Tasty by allowing us to cover all appetites,” indicates the internal document revealed by Le Parisien.
Despite this information, the web catches fire. Many see a way to reduce quantities without lowering the price, in fact, a method of “shrinkflation” that McDonald’s does not recognize.
