PHOENIX (AP) — Alek Thomas hit a three-run homer, Merrill Kelly delivered a quality 6 2/3 innings outing, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 7-3 on Friday.

Thomas had his big moment in the sixth, hitting a Jake Bird slider that stayed in the strike zone. The ball traveled to the right field seats to make the score 7-1.

Joc Pederson, playing his first game with the D-backs after signing a one-year, $9.5 million contract before this season, had four hits, including a double. Dominican Ketel Marte added three hits, received a walk and stole one more.

Pederson had the first four-hit debut in franchise history. Marte is the first player with consecutive three-hit games to start a season.

Kelly (1-0) looked dominant much of the night, allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight. The right-hander has pitched at least five innings in 30 consecutive games, which ranks second among current major league pitchers behind Mitch Keller’s streak of 32.

Cal Quantrill (0-1) allowed five runs on nine hits and walked one in five innings.

For the Rockies, Venezuelans Elías Díaz 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, Ezequiel Tovar 1-for-3.

For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Marte 4-3 with one run scored, Geraldo Perdomo 4-1; Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was 1 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored; Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
