EU Council Presidency

The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) must once once more be more closely aligned with the interests of farmers, said Hungary’s Agriculture Minister István Nagy in Brussels on Monday.
In the run-up to a meeting of EU agriculture ministers, Nagy outlined the five priorities of the Hungarian EU Council Presidency in the agricultural sector. Agriculture should be made more competitive, more resilient to crises, more sustainable and more knowledge-based. In addition, a farmer-friendly policy should be promoted in the EU.
Making rural areas more attractive
Nagy announced that he would present a dossier on improving the quality of life in rural areas during the Council meeting. The aim is to make rural areas more attractive for young people and thus secure the future. Following the ministerial meeting, he attended the meeting of the European farmers’ organisation Copa-Cogeca, which also took place in Brussels. As part of the Council Presidency, Hungary is proposing that regular meetings with farmers’ representatives be established in the future, as it is important to take the direct interests of farmers into account in European policy.
Grain imports from Ukraine are a controversial issue
With regard to the import of Ukrainian grain into the EU, the Council Presidency is striving for balanced solutions. These should create a balance between Ukraine and the EU countries, improve competitiveness and offer European farmers planning security – both in the short and long term.
