Diagnostic methods for diabetes – Hossam Mowafi explains the best analysis

Dr. Hossam Mowafi, Professor of Critical Cases at Kasr Al-Ainy College of Medicine, confirmed that the analysis of blood sugar following eating is better than measuring it during fasting.

Muwafi said during his program, “Rabbi Zadni Alma”, which is broadcast on the Sada Al-Balad channel, that the readings of a fasting person’s blood sugar are usually normal, even if the person has diabetes.

The professor of critical care medicine added that the analysis of blood sugar following eating diagnoses diabetes by up to 99%, provided that the blood sample is examined two hours following eating, to ensure accurate results.

He revealed that there is a more effective test in diagnosing diabetes, which is the blood sugar curve, explaining that it goes through a set of steps, including:

The patient’s fasting.

– Taking a blood sample from the patient upon arrival at the laboratory.

Drink a glass of water containing 100 grams of glucose.

– Take a second sample following half an hour.

A third sample was taken following an hour.

A fourth sample was taken following an hour.

Mowafi explained that the normal range of the blood sugar curve during fasting ranges from 80 to 120, then rises within 60 minutes to less than 140, and then regains its balance following two or three hours at most.
