Diagnose diabetes using voice

If it is obvious that our voice changes depending on our emotional or biological state, one thing we didn’t realize is that it can help detect diseases! This is the case for the type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent). When we look a little closer, we see that it is not just the vocal cords that produce the sound of the voice. It is orchestrated by a set of muscles and organs (lungs, larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, etc.) which can be directly affected by a disease. Furthermore, the voice is not only a sound, it is also a rhythm, a force, a flow. Taken together, these elements form our vocal biomarkers, which can also be altered indirectly, for example during the weakness of an organ such as the heart.

Having understood this relationship, scientists have developed technologies using artificial intelligence to identify vocal biomarkers of various diseases, such as Covid-19, depression or mild cognitive impairment and, more recently, type 2 diabetes. And this is real progress because the disease is insidious: scientists estimate that in 2023, there will still be hundreds of millions of people living with this diabetes without knowing it. A figure which is expected to continue to worsen by 2040. New, fast and accurate voice technology – which in the future can be used at home – should help counter this progression and reduce the costs of managing the disease.
