Anyone who lowers their risk of developing type 2 diabetes through a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, exercise and avoiding obesity also reduces the risk of dementia. Type 2 diabetics with an early onset of the disease are three times more likely to suffer from a brain dysfunction later on. That’s what a US study found. Prediabetes is also associated with an increased risk of dementia.
Onset before the age of 60 correlates strongly with the onset of dementia. Therefore, according to the study, preventing the transition from prediabetes to diabetes early might also significantly prevent future burden of dementia. The researchers urgently advise those affected by the preliminary stages of diabetes to counteract the onset of the metabolic disease – with a healthy lifestyle and weight loss.
