Bakel, Nov 17 (APS) – Doctor Aliou Ba, deputy to the chief physician of the Bakel health district, reported on Friday the frequent detection of diabetes, particularly type 2, in this department of the Tambacounda region ( East).

“Type 2 diabetes is very common with complications that require hospitalization,” he notably underlined on the sidelines of a press conference organized by the NGO Amref Health Africa and the Bakel health district as part of World Diabetes Day celebrations.

He noted that type 2 diabetes, characterized by complications requiring hospitalization, is often diagnosed there, as are other forms of the disease during routine consultations.

The World Diabetes Day celebrations are punctuated by screening sessions scheduled for Saturday and a hike the next day.

The president of Assad-Bakel (Senegalese Diabetic Support Association), Dia Diakité, expressed his concerns regarding the “establishment of the disease” in the locality, noting a significant number of cases.

“We can say that there is not a house in Bakel where a case of diabetes is not noted. Diabetes has taken hold here. It’s a disease that we cannot live with for several decades,” said Mr. Diakité.

Many elderly people present at the ceremony spoke regarding their experiences with the disease during the celebration of this Day, the theme of which this year is: “Educate to protect the future”.

Both Doctor Aliou Ba and Dia Diakité stressed the importance of a balanced diet, with emphasis on reducing the consumption of sugar and fat to close the door to diabetes.

“We need preventive measures, because that is the most important thing. A balanced diet, but also the fight once morest a sedentary lifestyle through physical activities, avoiding sugary foods and going to the hospital to receive and follow the advice of a treating doctor,” indicated Doctor Aliou Ba.
