Diabetes Jura bernois (DJB) wants to modernize. The association for information, advice and prevention for diabetes is going through complicated times and is currently short of members. When it was created in the 1980s, the structure could count on the support of 400 members. Today reduced to some 150 people, the committee and the assembly are struggling to renew themselves. One of the weak points that Denis Gerber, its president, points out is DJB’s lack of visibility. An association created more than 40 years ago which therefore wishes to help diabetics and their families. Denis Gerber explains that: “At the time, for diabetics, there was nothing”. A binding disease, which requires daily monitoring. “The association will therefore come to the aid by offering various services”.
The association, which held a press conference on Tuesday, also presented its new objectives and future prospects. Furthermore, the president of the association, Denis Gerber, is convinced of the usefulness of such a structure in the region. “The advantage is to be in a group and to exchange”, explains the president. Today, the goal is to find new “younger and more modern” solutions. It is in this sense that the president is appealing to a younger audience with diabetes, in order to allow the association to hold up over time.
It should also be noted that diabetes is the most common metabolic disease in Switzerland. 500,000 people are affected. /tbu
