DHL and Formula 1 once again advance in the area of sustainability with the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel or SAF. Since March this year, on services for the Australian Grand Prix, Formula 1 has been using DHL Global Forwarding’s GoGreen Plus service to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 80% per flight compared to conventional aviation fuel.
This marks a new chapter in the 20-year partnership between DHL and Formula 1. In fact, when it comes to the Singapore Grand Prix, approximately 20% of flights out of Europe this year are scheduled to use the GoGreen Plus service with SAF.
Additionally, SAF’s supply for Formula 1 air cargo logistics is supported by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certificationwhich acts as a seal of approval, guaranteeing that the fuel has been produced following strict sustainability criteria.
This sustainable fuel represents the latest chapter in DHL and Formula 1’s ongoing commitment to delivering more sustainable logistics. The operator is also betting on multimodal transportincluding air, sea and road transport, with the aim of optimizing route planning and logistics efficiency.
This season, for example, it has more than doubled its biofuel powered truck fleet to service the European stage of the F1 season, reaching a total of 37 trucks. Each truck contributes to an average greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 83% compared to its diesel counterparts.
DHL also uses Boeing 777 aircraft, whose fuel-efficient technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 17% compared to traditional airplanes. In the case of SAF, produced from renewable sources such as agricultural biomass and used cooking oil, it is purchased and transferred through the value chain using the claims book system.
Thus, at the time of purchase, customers reserve a specific amount of sustainable fuel and “complain“emission reductions in the face of its sustainability objectives, acquiring environmental benefits without physically possessing the fuel.
