Bangladesh police reported this Tuesday the arrest of a medical school professor for having shot and wounded a student with a firearm while he was giving a class at a university in Dhaka.
The professor of the community medicine department of the Shaheed M Monsur Ali Faculty of Medicine, Raihan Uddin, was arrested on Monday night based on the complaint filed by the father of the injured student, police superintendent Arifur Rahman told EFE.
The teacher shot the student in the thigh
The third-year student was admitted to the hospital with a wound to his right thigh. His situation is stable, the director of the university, Amirul Hossain, told EFE.
According to Rahman, the teacher and the student had had an argument days ago. “Yesterday, the student did not respond correctly in the classroom, and (the teacher) shot the student with a gun that he was carrying. At that time there were between eight and ten students present in the class,” he said.
Police responded to the incident following students began agitating on the university campus.
“We recovered the weapons he used and discovered that they were not licensed. The professor seemed to us to be a psychopath with a strong fascination for firearms. The cover photo of his phone was of a gun and his Facebook account was also full of videos of firearms,” he said.
Based on clues from his phone and social media account, authorities questioned the professor who admitted to possessing more weapons, the police officer said.
“According to the information received from him, we recovered another firearm from his office, 81 bullets and eight Burmese machetes. We arrested him later following the victim’s father filed a complaint once morest him,” he said.
The director of the university told EFE that the professor had been teaching community medicine at the faculty for a year.
“In the last three months, we also noticed unusual behavior…we have now initiated the process of departmental action once morest him,” he said.
