The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) stated that reliance on renewable and clean energy sources, especially solar energy, is increasing, especially in light of its low cost, and the global trend to contribute to addressing the repercussions of climate change by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, revealing its intention to establish a broad system. The range stores energy using electric batteries.

DEWA pointed out that the main challenge is to store this energy efficiently, to ensure its availability when the sun is absent and in cases of weather fluctuations, noting that it is one of the leading institutions in adopting the latest and best technologies for storing clean energy, and it has a number of the largest energy storage projects regionally and globally.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, said: “We work within the framework of the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, to ensure energy security and sustainability.”

He added: “Energy storage is vital to ensuring energy sustainability and increasing reliance on renewable and clean energy solutions. In addition to the energy storage projects that we have implemented or are working on implementing, we plan to establish a large-scale energy storage system using electric batteries that are supplied with photovoltaic energy at the (Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park), and we have a strategy and roadmap for green hydrogen that will be implemented in phases. “In line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050 for the Emirate of Dubai, to provide 100% of energy production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050.”

DEWA indicated that His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, inaugurated in December 2023 the fourth phase of the “Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park” with a capacity of 950 megawatts.

She added: “This phase will provide clean energy to regarding 320,000 homes, and will contribute to reducing 1.6 million tons of carbon emissions annually. The fourth phase also uses three joint technologies to produce clean energy, including a parabolic inverter system with a total capacity of 600 megawatts, a concentrated solar energy tower with a capacity of 100 megawatts, in addition to photovoltaic solar panels with a capacity of 250 megawatts, with investments amounting to 15.78 billion dirhams according to the independent energy product system. The project includes the highest concentrated solar energy tower in the world, with a height of 263,126 metres, and the largest thermal energy storage capacity with a capacity of 5,907 megawatt hours, according to Guinness World Records.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority stated that it is working on implementing a hydroelectric station using stored water energy technology in Hatta.

The Authority pointed out the implementation of a pilot project to produce green hydrogen at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Complex, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region to produce green hydrogen using solar energy, store it and then convert it back into electrical energy, in addition to other uses.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority revealed that it is conducting experiments on a number of advanced experimental systems for storing energy using batteries, as the Authority’s Research and Development Center registered a new patent for an innovative method to improve the work of electrodes in “lithium-ion” batteries, sodium and sulfur batteries, and redox batteries. .
