„Désirée is a haunting slice of bossa nova psychedelia and a musical movie for your mind! It penetrates your ears like a lost theme song to a 42nd street erotic classic.“ announced Devil’s Witches via Instagram. That’s right, absolutely!
Almost a year and a half following the 2022 long player In All Her Forms James Abilene (who seems to have been a bit of a globetrotter lately?) resumes his charmingly anachronistic devilish work. The dusty film projector begins to run, a pompous organ atmosphere spreads out in a hallucinogenic trance, calm and dreamy to the airy tabla percussion. The guitar strums absentmindedly along with these textural swaths, at some point soloing in front of police sirens in an acoustic feeling, then reinforced at the end with a classic rock/desert feeling, disappearing into the somewhat too abrupt end of the chilled lounge haze.
Abilene’s singing is softly embedded in the seductive ambience with a catchy melody and a feeling for hooks, the romance gets a murderous twist (“Watching your eyes grow dark/ You’re not Désirée/ I cannot stand you breathing anyway/ She’s everything you’re not/ You’re body’s cold she’s hot/ You are easily forget, not Désirée“) and the promised atmosphere is immediately captivating.
„Take a psychedelic trip back to 1970s New York. The glow from the grindhouse marquee beckons you to get lost in a tale of sex, obsession and murder. Down through 42nd and 8th, past the show world centre and onto the Victory theatre…“
The tension of Desiree remains elegiac and calm, engaging in an almost subversive way and in the tradition of songs like Space Cadet or Like a Drug, just more sedative. Also means: standalone singles from Devil’s Witches just stay great.
